Why I Teach Grammar Without Teaching Grammar

Confession time: Teaching grammar can be boring. 😅
Don’t get me wrong. I love English Grammar.

As a language learner, I studied hard. I even tried to memorize that long list of irregular verbs!

As an English teacher, I learned different methods to teach grammar. But when I got to the classroom… something felt off.

Every student’s book had a grammar section:
“Look at the sentence and underline all the verbs.”
“Complete the rules with the words in the box.”…

That’s not what I wanted.

I wanted to teach grammar in disguise.

What does that mean?
It means students learn grammar without thinking about rules. They use it to say what they really mean – clearly.

That’s the real reason grammar matters.
It helps you say what you want to say.
And it helps the other person understand you.

That was the real challenge.

Not memorizing rules.
Not filling in blanks.
Not copying lists.

Because in the end, students don’t need English to pass a test.
They need it to communicate.
To express themselves clearly.
To reach their professional goals.

💬 I’m curious, did the grammar you learned at school actually help you communicate better in English, like when writing emails?

Fellow English teachers, do you enjoy teaching grammar?

Let me know in the comments. I’d love to hear your experience!
